Research Diary
Week 1 - We met Garrett Mullan, Show Racism The Red Card
In our lab class on Wednesday we were given the design assignment to redesign 'Show Racism the Red Card' after Garrett Mullan gave a short presentation of what the company is about. Show Racism The Red (SRRC) is a charity based company who aim to work along side education and sport to stop racism on our communities, through competitions, advertisements and education packs.
"Show Racism the Red Card is harnessing the profile of sport to educate against racism. We are also supporting programmes that encourage integration and sport."
Week 2 - Mind mapped some ideas
In the second week I researched some images of what racism is, getting an idea of for mood board to help creative a logo for SRRC. These are some photographs and graphics, which I feel show a strong appearance of racism.
Week 3 - Started looking into brand
I researched some strong typography which is illustrated as font and a meaning image.

Week 4 - Creation of brand identify
These are some brand logos and images which I researched.
Week 5 - Brand Guildlines
These are a few researched brand guildines.
Week 6 - Design Specification part 1
I started researching some navigation in various websites. All these navigations have a simple design, which can be clearly be easily navigated by the user using jquery and jasvascript.
Week 7 - Design Specification part 2
These are a few page layouts of websites which show interaction and good functionality.
Week 8 - Developing upon Design
I decided to use kuler, colourschemedesigner, crown and colour hunter to help me choose some colour schemes for SRRC.
Week 9 - Developing Prototype website
Usability is very important in websites to allow the user to focus on key tasks. This can be done by clear categorising in menu section. "A measure of how easy it is for a user to complete a task. In the context of Web pages this concerns how easy it is for a user to find the information they require from a given Web site". I looked at several websites that test usability such as; google analytics, usabilla, crazyegg, userfly and silver backapp. These downloadable apps provides screen capture activity by recording participants reactions with every mouse movement and clicks.
For example Usabilla has many companies using this application. Thomas Cook quotes "Usabilla enables us to test new features in an early stage of development. We can involve our customers without slowing down the development of our website." Also Google Analytics will "analyze your traffic data in an entirely new way."
These are some key guildlines on usability;
- Clear navigation - showed in an ordered and task-oriented manner
- Meaningful graphics - show relevant images relating to content
- Clear meta tags - for good visibility in search engines
- Memorable url - enables the user to remember website name easily
- Professional design - this creates a good 1st impression
- Taglines - important to show a clear title
- Site map - easy to find hyperlinks which are hidden and show overall links of site
- Summary of web page - only showing relevant information
- Ideal search box - easy for users to search throughout the website
These are a few examples of usability guildline websites;

Week 10 - Accessibility
There are many principles of accessibility for online users which effect how they use the internet that webaim.org quotes such as;
- Visual - blindness, low vision & colour blindness
- Hearing - deafness
- Motor - inability to use a mouse, slow response time & limited fine motor control
- Cognitive - learning disabilities, distractibility, inability to remember or focus on large amounts of information
Week 11 - Promotion and testing
As a group we spend the last few weeks coding up the website, hightlighting over usability and accessibility to make sure everything is included to optimise the best search engine results. Web aim is a website used to provide a free web accessibility evaluation tool to complex a technical report with can be used on firefox toolbars.
Week 12 - Screen Cast and Final Website
As a group after finalising the website, we produced a screencast for the client presentation on Wednesday. Jason and Aaron produced a script before using the application so we wouldnt have to rerecord several times. We used Quicktime Player to screen and audio record our presentation and showed our screencast on Wednesday. We were very pleased with our Show Racism The Red Card website, although in future we could include several photographs in the factsheets to make it more visual appealing.
